Terezín Sings

Welcome to our website for Signs of Life, a musical drama about the Czech ghetto Terezín (also known as Theresienstadt). We—Peter Ullian (bookwriter), Len Schiff (lyricist), and Joel Derfner (composer)—are very happy that Amas Musical Theatre, a not-for-profit champion of new work, hopes to produce our show in New York in October of 2009.

The characters in Signs of Life, like many Jews deported to the Czech ghetto Terezín, are among the intellectual and artistic elite of Europe. Even in the camp, many are convinced that what has happened to them is simply a terrible misunderstanding. However, when the Nazis "beautify" the camp in preparation for a visit from the Red Cross (which is completely duped by the sham), the inmates are forced to face the reality: they are unlikely to survive the war. They react by telling the real truth through art and music—and by finally discovering the humanity in each other, and in themselves.

As time passes, fewer and fewer people remember the Holocaust. Each of us writers has survivors in the family, and we believe fervently that the Shoah must never be forgotten. So we've set up this website, hoping that if you find out more about our show we'll be able to bring an important piece of Jewish history to life.
